Originally for oboe, these two early Fantasy Pieces by Carl Nielsen (1865-1931), Denmark's most famous composer, transcribe well for double bass. They would be ideal for players of about Grade 8 level offering effective musical and technical challenges in the orchestral register, but also venturing into thumb position. Romance is lyrical and evocative, contrasting a more lively and playful Humoresque.
